Wigan Central railway station

Wigan Central railway station

Wigan Central railway station was a former railway station near the centre of Wigan, England and was some way away from the two main stations (North Western and Wallgate) which were on the western edge of the town centre. Central station was built by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (later to become the Great Central) and opened on 3 October 1892. It replaced Wigan (Darlington Street) station, which had opened on 1 April 1884, on the extension of the line nearer to the town centre. Wigan Central was the terminus of the branch line from Glazebrook Junction (and on to Manchester Central) and closed on 2 November 1964. The building, which was on Station Road near to the town centre, was subsequently demolished and the site was reconstructed in 2007/08 as the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre.
