DXGM (video codec)

DXGM (video codec)

DXGM (possibly meaning "DivX game") is an undocumented fourcc that has been attributed to Electronic Arts, [ [http://www.codecsdb.com/?page=codecinfo&type=video&code=DXGM Codecs Database by DAMIX Technologies and KC Softwares ] ] but has also appeared in game videos unaffiliated with EA. The codec itself is actually plain DivX with a trivially modified fourcc header. It has been used to encode movie files that are assets in a video game, such as intro movies.

To play DXGM-encoded files with media player software, it may be necessary to change the fourcc back to a recognized DivX-compatible fourcc such as "DX50" or "XVID", or otherwise coerce the player into using these codecs for playback. The fourcc header can be changed using an avi editor or a tool made specifically for this purpose. As there is no official documentation about this codec, the purpose of this fourcc is unclear. It has been suggested that the fourcc is used expressly to deny movie playback outside of the game itself, presumably to discourage editing and fair use of the material.
