Indiana University Student Association

The Indiana University Student Association (IUSA) is the student government organization at Indiana University in Bloomington. IUSA consists of three branches, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

IUSA is a congregation of Indiana University students that work to protect student rights, enrich student life, and improve Indiana University. Students join together to voice common concerns, hopes, grievances, and most importantly, to take action to realize an even stronger University. Currently, the student body president is W.T. Wright and the Vice President for Administration is Joe Dejean.

Historically, this student group's leaders and the campus generally was very active in the late 1960s and 1970s against the Vietnam War and for progressive causes, according to the [http://alumni.indiana.edu/magazine/issues/200603/conflict.shtml IU Alumni Magazine] .

IUSA has led the fight for campus daycare, more liberal rules for students, and against tuition increases. In 1996, IUSA passed a resolution chastising former U.S. Rep. John Hostettler, who represented Bloomington at the time, for wanting to abolish the popular Federal Direct Student Loan Program. This resolution, authored by Indiana University School of Law representative Andrew Straw, passed 38-3, with the three no votes coming from College Republicans. Hostettler was later redistricted so as not to represent Bloomington following the 2000 census.
