Chanakia is between the plain of Pyrgos and the mountains area that covers the northwestern part, its ranges stretches from Katakolo to Foloi. The farmlands are in the plain area, they are predominantly made up of groves, the remainder are forested with pines, firs, spruces and cypresses. Much of the area to the southeast is the plain.

Chanakia was established as a trade hub close to the main road to Patra and Pyrgos by residents from the nearby Alpochori, which remains to this day the seat of the municipal district. Gradually, it evolved as a mere autonomous settlement, especially because more and more people from the mountainous Alpochori built their homes in the flat Chanakia, in close proximity of their farms.

Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. It was linked with pavement in the 1980s. Most of the homes are abandoned today.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of the population left for larger towns and cities especially the nearby Patras. The population remained steady since the mid to late 20th century.
