Avon is a town in Washington Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,248 at the 2000 census. The 2005 Indiana Population Estimate Update estimated the population as 8,918. [cite web

Avon was incorporated in 1995. Previous town names included Hampton, White Lick, Smootsdale and New Philadelphia. The name Avon was placed on a sign by the railroad company.

Geography

Avon is located at coor dms|39|45|47|N|86|23|16|W|city (39.763160, -86.387900)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.4 square miles (16.5 km²), of which, 6.4 square miles (16.5 km²) of it is land and 0.16% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 6,248 people, 2,127 households, and 1,786 families residing in the town. The population density was 979.2 people per square mile (378.1/km²). There were 2,240 housing units at an average density of 351.1/sq mi (135.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.87% White, 0.58% African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.36% of the population.

There were 2,127 households out of which 51.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.4% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.0% were non-families. 12.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the town the population was spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 39.3% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $66,782, and the median income for a family was $68,205. Males had a median income of $48,542 versus $31,010 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,740. About 2.7% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 15.8% of those age 65 or over. Avon is 4 miles north to south.

Marching band

The Avon High School marching band, Avon Marching Black and Gold, led by Jay Webb, Matt Harloff, and Robert Burns, has been ranked number one in the state of Indiana by the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) seven years in a row (two times in Class B, five times in Class A). They have been nationally ranked as one of the best bands in the country (number two in 2007) during Bands of America Grand Nationals. [cite web
