Plot summary

Caty is a thirteen year old Quaker girl who leads a simple life with her mother, father, and younger brother, Thomas. At first she writes in her journal about school, meetings (church services) and her crush, a handsome, spunky boy named Jess. But when the family hears about the Indian raids and massacres in nearby cities, fear grows. Caty is terrified to death of what may happen. Then one day while walking to school, Caty and Thomas are both captured by Lenape Indians. They are taken to their camp, and Thomas is separated from his sister. Caty is adopted by an old woman named White Owl and her daughter, Little Cloud. Caty is called "Snowbird". Caty decided to hate her new family and their traditions and customs. But when she befriends a handsome young hunter named "Snow Hunter" and a romance develops, she grows to love her new people. Seasons pass, and then tragically Caty is torn apart from her new family, and her love.

Snow Hunter is killed by white men, and Caty and Thomas are taken back to their real home. Caty's mom is shocked by Caty dancing and acting like a savage when she was captured and does not speak much to her daughter. Caty gives her diary to her father, and he reads it. Instead of being ashamed, he tells Caty that he is proud of her for "Standing in The Light".

It also includes an Epilogue and historical note.
