Bensenville is a village located primarily in DuPage County, Illinois, with a small section near O'Hare International Airport in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 20,703. Bensenville is home to The Edge Ice Arena, the official practice rink of the Chicago Blackhawks professional ice hockey team and home of the Chicago Steel junior ice hockey team. The neighborhood has a diverse population and is home to a high concentration of Mexicans. Also the site of Victory Auto Wreckers, a convert|7|acre|m2|sing=on junkyard on Green Street which has repeatedly played the same commercial, starring Bob Zajdel, on Chicago television stations since 1981. The Spilotro brothers were executed in a basement in Bensenville and buried in a cornfield in Indiana as depicted in the movie "Casino" which depicts the corruption at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. Joe Pesci portrayed one of the Spilotro brothers.

Bensenville is located at coor dms|41|57|29|N|87|56|45|W|city (41.958043, -87.945773)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 20,703 people, 6,885 households, and 4,654 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,447.2 people per square mile (1,330.0/km²). There were 7,120 housing units at an average density of 1,185.5/sq mi (457.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 11.14% White, 4.80% African American, 0.45% Native American, 6.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.61% from other races, and 3.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 86.14% of the population.

There were 6,885 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.56.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $54,662, and the median income for a family was $59,008. Males had a median income of $35,392 versus $27,296 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,040. About 4.2% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.

Transportation

Bensenville has a station on Metra's Milwaukee District/West Line, which provides daily rail service between Elgin, Illinois and Chicago, Illinois (at Union Station). From there, passengers can connect to an Amtrak train.
