The Verge, formerly Tekka Mall (Chinese: 德卡廊), is the first and largest modern shopping mall at the Little India precinct in Singapore, being opened in 2003. The Verge has two buildings, the main building and another housing Sheng Siong Hypermarket. It is located on the southern part of Little India, with the main building is located on the junction of Serangoon Road and Sungei Road and the Sheng Siong building is located on the junction of Perak Road and Sungei Road. Both of the buildings are separated by Clive Road and the mall It lies opposite Tekka Centre across Serangoon Road. On August 2008, Tekka Mall will be revamped and will be renamed to The Verge, with the Sheng Siong building to be renamed to the Chill @ The Verge.

History

Tekka Mall was built on the site of the old Kandang Kerbau Market, which was torn down in 1982 to make way for the construction of Tekka Mall.

Makeover

Despite being the first shopping mall in Little India, many tenants have a hard time doing business in the mall, with a number of the tenants closing down its outlet. To improve this situation, Tekka Mall will be refurbished to give it a more contemporary and brighter feel, with the mall also being renamed to The Verge. Also, it will be transform into a IT, lifestyle and F&B hub. Currently, discussion are underway to secure a number of electronics outlets. For the adjoining block (Sheng Siong building), it will undergo a makeover to target the youths, being renamed to Chill @ The Verge. The makeover is expected to be completed by mid-2009.

Facilities

Main Building

Although it is considered the main building, it is about half the size of the Chill @ The Verge. Tenants in the main building are mainly thrift shops, ranging from jewellery to household items to clothings. There are also some food shops, a music school, a betting outlet, some travel agencies, a department store, a fresh market and a money changer. There was once a Burger King outlet at basement 1 but it has closed down due to lack of businesses.

Chill @ The Verge

Bigger that the main building, the Chill @ The Verge, formerly the "Sheng Siong building", is mostly occupied by Sheng Siong - it owns the food court at level 1 and the hypermart at level 2. There are also a few minor tenants selling items like handphone accessories and pre-school books. Chill @ The Verge also has a car park located on levels 3 to 7 and a loading and unloading bay.

Linkbridges

One can walk between the main building and the Chill @ The Verge either by crossing the road that separate the two building or use any of the three linkbridge located on levels 2, 5 and 6 of both buildings.
