The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan is the vice-regal representative of the Queen of Canada in the province of Saskatchewan. The role of the Lieutenant Governor is to carry out the constitutional and ceremonial duties of the monarch in the province.

The Governor General appoints the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatcehwan on the advice of the Prime Mininster, and in consultation with the Premier of Saskatchewan. There is no set limit to a Lieutenant Governor's term, the traditional description being "at Her Majesty's pleasure."

The present Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan is Gordon Barnhart, who has served in the role since August 1, 2006.

History

Since 1905, twenty lieutenant governors have served Saskatchewan; previously they acted as Lieutenant Governors of the Northwest Territories. Sylvia Olga Fedoruk, a scientist and former Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan, was the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, between 1988-1994.

Duties

The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan is vested with a number of governmental duties, as well as being expected to undertake various ceremonial roles. The Lieutenant Governor, him or herself a recipient of the award as Chancellor of the Order, bestows the Saskatchewan Order of Merit on deserving Saskatchewan citizens. The Lieutenant Governor also distributes the following vice-regal honours: [ [http://www.ltgov.sk.ca/honours_and_awards.htm Lieutenant Govenror of Saskatchewan: Honours and Awards] ]

The Lieutenant Governor also attends various functions throughout the province and abroad, either as the host or a guest of honour. Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governors are actively involved in the arts community as patrons to many organisations and initiatives. The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association, the Saskatchewan Craft Council, and the provincial poet laureate programme are examples. The Lieutenant Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, established through the Saskatchewan Arts Board, is another example of the active vice-regal patronage of artists and artisans. Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock launched The Lieutenant Governor's Celebration of the Arts Pin in May, 2006, which honours organizations and individuals who enrich, educate and entertain the citizens of Saskatchewan through their accomplishments in and support of the arts. Thousands of pins were awarded to artists in all disciplines, craftspeople, arts administrators, staff and board members, arts educators, students involved in the arts, donors and patrons, and volunteers. The Cameron McIntosh Memorial Cup, named for Lieutenant Governor Cameron Irwin McIntosh, is awarded annually at Theatre Saskatchewan's TheatreFest. ymbols

The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan bears a personal flag that consists of a blue field bearing the shield of the Arms of Her Majesty in Right of Saskatchewan, surmounted by a crown, and surrounded by ten gold maple leafs, symbolizing the ten provinces.

The flag is flown on the Lieutenant Governor's car, on the provincial landau (used on ceremonial occasions), and may also be flown on a building where the Lieutenant Governor is present; the vice-regal standard is never used inside a building. At the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina, commissioned portraits of Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governors are housed in the building's locally-designed Qu'Appelle Gallery.
