The Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (SCS), is a school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., United States. SCS provides a Georgetown education to students at every stage of learning, including high school programs for adolescents, summer school programs for college students, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, certificate programs for professionals, and continuing education courses for seniors age 55 and older. Founded as the School of Summer and Continuing Education in 1956, it graduated its first students in 1975. The school offers an bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies, a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree, and a Doctor of Liberal Studies degree, the first known doctorate of its kind in the world. The school also offers Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degrees in journalism, real estate, public relations/corporate communications, sports industry management, and beginning in January 2009, human resources management. Another branch of SCS is the Georgetown University Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE), which offers certificate programs in paralegal studies, financial planning, project management, executive leadership, organizational development, and other areas related to professional advancement. CCPE also engages corporate and government entities to customize educational offerings to fit specific needs of the organization. Most SCS courses are designed to cater to non-traditional adult students and professionals, with most classes being held in the evenings and on weekends. Courses are offered on the Georgetown University main campus, the M Street campus in northwest Washington, and the metro-accessible Arlington, VA campus.

Liberal Studies

Since 1974, SCS has provided education in liberal studies through an interdisciplinary program that allows students to take courses in a variety of areas and develop knowledge across a range of curricular fields. Currently, students can earn a bachelor's, graduate, or doctoral degree in liberal studies. Bachelor's degree candidates can take courses in "American Studies, Catholic Studies, Classical Civilizations, Communications, Ethics and the Professions, Humanities, International Affairs, Leadership, Literature and Society, Religious Studies, Social/Public Policy, The Theory and Practice of American Democracy, or Urban Analysis and Community Development". Master of Arts in Liberal Studies candidates can take courses in similar areas, except that graduate courses are not offered in Leadership, Communications, and Urban Analysis and Community Development. Additionally, graduate students may take courses in Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations, Medieval and Early Modern European Studies, and Visual Culture. The most popular path to graduation is through Individualized Study, where students work with an academic advisor to devise a customized course of study that fits their unique interests.

Master of Professional Studies

The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degree at Georgetown University is a graduate degree awarded after a course of study that blends academic theory with practical application. It is designed to ensure that graduates enter the workforce well prepared for a professional career. Students learn from a team instructors made up of both academic scholars and high-level industry professionals. All students must complete a capstone course, an intensive semester-long project involving a contemporary industry problem. Currently MPS degrees are offered in "journalism, public relations/corporate communications, sports industry management, human resources management, and real estate." An advisory board of accomplished industry professionals is attached to each program.

Admissions to the MPS Programs

Prerequisites----

Candidates for either the Master’s or Advanced Professional Certificate must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college. Additionally, candidates for the Advanced Professional Certificate must demonstrate a high level of professional proficiency in their chosen concentration.

Financial Aid----

Master of Professional Studies and Advanced Professional Certificate programs are registered with Georgetown University. Students may be eligible for federal tuition assistance if they qualify. To determine eligibility for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To be eligible, students must be enrolled at least half-time.

The MPS in Journalism is led by Barbara Feinman Todd
Barbara Feinman Todd is the Associate Dean of Journalism for the Masters of Professional Studies. She also is the Journalism Director in Georgetown University’s English Department where she teaches. She has worked in Washington as a freelance editor and writer for more than two decades, assisting as ghostwriter, editor or researcher for senators, journalists, and business leaders on several high-profile books including Bob Woodward’s VEIL (Simon & Schuster, 1987), Carl Bernstein’s Loyalties (Simon & Schuster, 1989), former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky’s A Woman’s Place: The Freshmen Women Who Changed the Face of Congress (Crown Publishers, 1994); former Washington Post Executive Editor Benjamin Bradlee’s A Good Life (Simon & Schuster, 1994); Palestinian spokesperson Hanan Ashrawi’s This Side of Peace, (Simon & Schuster, 1995); former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s It Takes A Village (Simon & Schuster, 1995); and former Nebraska senator Bob Kerrey’s When I Was A Young Man (Harcourt, 2002).

She has a degree in writing from the University of California at Berkeley and a master’s degree in English from Georgetown University. She has also taught writing at Johns Hopkins University. Her own work has appeared in many publications including The Washington Post, Glamour, The Writer’s Chronicle and on National Public Radio.

The MPS in Public Relations is led by Denise Keyes
Denise Keyes is the associate dean of the Master of Professional Studies in Public Relations and Corporate Communication at Georgetown University. She launched the program in 2007 and was responsible for the design of its innovative applied curriculum which focuses on educating responsible communicators. One of hallmarks of the program is the Center for Social Impact Communications (CSIC) which reflects Ms. Keyes’ own passion and experience using the power of communications to create positive change. CSIC provides leadership opportunities for communicators to work with socially responsible corporations, nonprofits and global NGOs. In addition to her responsibilities as dean, Ms. Keyes serves as the director of CSIC. She also teaches at Georgetown’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership and serves as a fellow for the Center for Social Justice.

Prior to joining Georgetown, Ms. Keyes was a senior counselor at Fleishman-Hillard where she managed a portfolio of corporate, nonprofit and foundation clients in the social marketing practice including Gatorade, ESPN, American Red Cross and the MacArthur Foundation. During this time she was awarded a Silver Anvil for a campaign helping people with disabilities transition to employment.

Ms. Keyes managed the Washington, DC start-up of Cone's award-winning cause branding practice. In that role, she designed signature cause programs for Fortune 100 corporations on a range of social issues and causes including breast cancer, financial literacy and education. Ms. Keyes also served as vice president of marketing and strategic alliances for the Points of Light Foundation where she created corporate partnerships that integrate employee volunteerism with cause marketing.

Ms. Keyes began her career in advertising managing multinational brands such as American Express, MasterCard and Shell. She worked for a number of major advertising agencies including Ogilvy & Mather in New York and London before moving to Washington, DC where she has lived for the past 14 years.

Ms. Keyes taught communications in the masters program at Johns Hopkins University. She is frequent speaker at national conferences on CSR, cause marketing and branding. She served on the board of directors of the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers and as the chair of Community Health Charities of the National Capital Area. Ms. Keyes has a masters in public communication from American University and a certificate in public and nonprofit leadership from Georgetown University.

The MPS in Sports Industry Management is led by Matthew Winkler
Associate Dean Matt Winkler has blended over 15 years of experience in the NCAA, NHL, WNBA, MLS, the Olympics, and the World Cup into developing a new sports industry education initiative for 2008 at Georgetown University as Associate Dean for Sports Industry Management.

Before coming to Georgetown in December, 2007, Winkler served as Regional Sales Manager for the Lincoln Holdings franchises of the Washington Capitals (NHL) and Washington Mystics (WNBA).

Winkler is also the Founder & Executive Director of the premier sports career conference known as the Sports Events Marketing Experience (SEME – East, West & Central). Developed originally as Octagon University in 2003, SEME was launched by Winkler and associates in Washington, D.C. in 2004 as SEME East and hosted by George Washington University. The brand, now run by Sports Industry Education LLC under Winkler, has since expanded to Los Angeles (SEME West / U.S.C.) and now Chicago (SEME Central/ Northwestern) this past April.

During the previous three years, launched two entrepreneurial consulting projects as SEME and founder of the former marketing communications and pubic relations firm, MW Marketing/Communications, with partner Chris Stockton. MW M/C clients included Octagon, NFL’s USA Football, USA Gymnastics Visa Cup, Fight For Children’s Fight Night and One Shot Racing.

With over ten years of leadership in the NCAA Athletics and Media Information business, Winkler recently served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Public Relations at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, after a six-year stint as Assistant Athletics Director for Communications, and Director of Athletic Communications and Sports Information at American University. He worked at Lehigh University prior to returning to his hometown to begin work at AU.

Winkler frequently served as an on-site game-day media operations consultant for U.S. Soccer and D.C. United as well as the NCAA and their championships for Men’s Basketball and Men’s Soccer. His external experiences have been extensive. He has served as a media operations coordinator for several national and international events such as: the 2003 World Cup, 2002 Winter Olympics Salt Lake City; the 1999 Women's World Cup in D.C, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments in 2002, 2001, 1998, 1996, and 1994; the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, 1994 World Cup in Washington, D.C. and the 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In the academic circles at the American University, Winkler developed and taught the course “Sports Communication & Media” and “Sports Marketing Management” in the Washington, D.C. metro area at American University, George Mason University and George Washington University.

Winkler, a native of West Bethesda, MD, who earned his M.A. in Public Communication at American University, was an N.C.A.A. student-athlete (soccer and basketball) in college (Curry College, Milton, MA). He is an active member of Public Relations Society of American (PRSA) and earned his strategic public relations accreditation, the APR, from that organization.

Center for Continuing and Professional Education

Georgetown University offers certificate programs and continuing education courses designed to help professionals change careers or advance in their current careers. Most Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) courses are offered at the Arlington, Virginia campus across from the Clarendon, VA metro station. Current certificate programs include paralegal studies, project management, executive leadership, organizational development, information technology, financial planning, business administration, international business, marketing, and leadership coaches. Continuing education courses are offered in dozens of other areas.

ummer programs for high school students

Over 1,000 high school students come to Georgetown during the summer to participate in a variety of programs designed to help them prepare for college and professional careers. The programs give them access to Georgetown professors, experts in a given field, and other achievers from around the world. A college preparatory component helps student master college entrance exams, math, and advanced reading comprehension. Students can also take college courses for credit with regular Georgetown students during the summer. Current programs include "International Relations, American Politics & Public Affairs, National Security and Counterintelligence, College Preparatory, Journalism, Fundamentals of Business, Performing Arts in Washington, Computer Science, and Environmental Science".

Administration


Robert L. Manuel, PhD, is dean of the School of Continuing Studies at Georgetown University. He has gained international recognition during his 15 years in higher education for his development and implementation of innovative academic programs, including graduate and online degree programs at both Georgetown and New York University. In little over two years since arriving at Georgetown, he has revamped the university’s only part-time bachelor’s degree program and introduced five new master’s degree programs. Manuel’s emphasis on targeted outreach has resulted in growth for all of the school’s programs, many of which have seen student enrollment multiply several fold.

As the dean of the School of Continuing Studies, Dr. Manuel oversees all of Georgetown’s professional, summer, and continuing education programs as well as the first doctoral degree program in Liberal Studies in the United States and Canada. He is a member of the Dean’s Council at Georgetown University, and the University Campaign Council. He sits on the editorial advisory board for the University Continuing Education Association's (UCEA) Continuing Higher Education Review, is a member of the ACE CREDIT advisory board, and is a former UCEA commissioner.

Before arriving at Georgetown, Dean Manuel served as assistant dean and clinical associate professor at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). In this capacity, he was responsible for administering several master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degree programs as well as managing online certificate programs. At NYU, Manuel increased the online student retention rate, decreased non-credit course cancellations, and created industry partnerships that resulted in innovative programs for the school.

Dr. Manuel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history and political science from Allegheny College, a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University, and a PhD from New York University.
