Hunting Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Hunting Park is a neighborhood in the North Philadelphia section of the United States city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Like many North Philadelphia neighborhoods, it grew mainly in the 1920s and 1940s. The neighborhood's namesake is a large park which is a regular location for recreation for many in the area. John Philip Sousa is rumored to have played in the bandstand there (bands still played there until the early sixties), and a minor league baseball team called the park home; a 'Lake' which was used for renting small rowboats until a city pool was built on the former pier; it also had a ring-catch carousel on the center lawn island , and ball fields. it had small wooden concessions stands around the park that sold snacks and bird seed. and large playground and picnic grounds. it was used by local scouts for its then 'Annual Indian Roundup", and other scouting events. it was an important part of the local community. The neighborhood began to lose population in the 1950s. Today there are a number of abandoned structures and a high crime rate in the neighborhood. However many feel that Hunting Park is becoming slowly gentrified as real estate values increase and community members become more organized.

In 2005,the 19140 zip code, which contains roughly Hunting Park and Nicetown-Tioga, had a median home sale price of $39,650. Although this price is far lower than the median price for Philadelphia as a whole, this was an increase of 56% over the median price for 2004, the second largest increase of the year of any zip code in the City.
