Attack in Black are a Canadian rock band, formed in Welland, Ontario. They first signed to Skate Ahead Records for their self-titled album debut in 2005. In spring 2006, they signed with Dine Alone Records, home to other big Canadian acts such as City and Colour, Bedouin Soundclash, The Black Lungs and Cancer Bats.

Attack in Black’s music merges old school rock and roll with modern day punk rock. In some respects, their sound resembles popular forms of melodic, aggressive or energetic punk rock. The band has also been influenced by unlikely sources from Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, to Refused and Ramones, to Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski.

History

The band members began their careers playing eight-band hard rock shows and opening for such bands as Death by Stereo and Every Time I Die. The band immediately had a following in the Welland area, due to having performed in other local acts prior to Attack in Black's formation. Originally comprised of brothers Ian and Daniel Romano, guitarist Spencer Burton, and bassist Aaron Murphy, the band recorded a self-titled EP with Grimsby, Ontario label Skate Ahead Records. After its release in 2004, Murphy quit and was replaced by another Welland-area musician, Matt Ellis. Ellis did not stay in the band long, where he left and was replaced by Ian Kehoe, who had previously been in a band with Burton.

Closely following the lineup change, Attack in Black toured to Victoria, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta to play a number of hard rock shows. Upon their return, they spoke with promoter Joel Carriere, who had just founded Dine Alone Records. He offered to sign them and put out their next EP, and, in early 2006, the band accepted. The four-song "Widows" EP resulted from this new agreement and was released September 16, 2006. [Sutherland, Sam. When the time came to record their first full album, they went to Chemical Sound Studios in Toronto with Ian Blurton for a two-week session. Immediately upon completion of the recordings, Dine Alone insisted that the record did not meet their standards and the band was sent back to the studio with local producer Dan Weston. The result was a record that the band admits benefited from the extra recording time.

The album, entitled " Marriage", was released on July 31, 2007, coinciding with a record launch show at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario. They also released "The Curve of the Earth", which consists entirely of acoustic songs, in November 2007. [Lindsay, Cam. Spencer Burton and Daniel Romano have been active and involved in helping Dallas Green of City and Colour on his solo album, "Bring Me Your Love", released February 12, 2008. Romano contributed on almost all songs playing instruments ranging from the drums to the organ, with Burton adding instruments such as mandolin and bass, and also vocals in on the track, "The Girl".
