Santomeri

Santomeri (Greek: Σαντομέρι), older forms: -o and -on is a Greek village located about approximately south-southeast of Kato Achaia, south of Alissos, south-southwest of Patras and northeast of Pyrgos. The GR-9 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia is the north. Santomeri had a 2001 population of was 396 for the village and 47 for the municipal district. It is one of the few municipalities in Greece that shares a village the same 2001 population and one of the few that is a municipal district and the other being not.

Geography

Santomeri is situated in a valley area, the mountains lies to the west and Mount Skollis to the east. The farmlands are mainly in the valley areas as well as forests. Grasslands are to the west and barren rock to the east. Its main production are fruits including watermelon, melon, figs and vegetables including corn, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cucumbers and others as well as dairy, livestock, olives and others. The majority of the population are based in other businesses as well as agriculture.

Santomeri has approximately 10 km of paved road and 15 to 20 km of gravel roads. Santomeri also has approximately 10 km of hydro lines as well as phone lines.

Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. It was linked with pavement in the 1980s. Most of the homes are abandoned today.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of the population left for larger towns and cities especially the nearby Patras. The population decline between the 1981 and the 1991 census, it recovered between the 1991 and the 2001 censuses.

Santomeri has a school, a lyceum (middle school), a nearest school gymnasium (secondary school), a church, and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest hospital is the Agios Andreas Hospital in eastcentral Patras.
