The New York Mets' 1978 season was the 17th regular season for the Mets, who played played home games at Shea Stadium. Led by manager Joe Torre, the team had a 66-96 record yielding a 6th place finish in the National League's Eastern Division.

Offseason

* December 8, 1977: John Milner was traded by the Mets to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a four-team trade. The Mets also traded Jon Matlack to the Rangers. Willie Montañez was traded by the Atlanta Braves to the Mets, and Tom Grieve and a player to be named later were traded by the Texas Rangers to the Mets. Bert Blyleven was traded by the Rangers to the Pirates, and Al Oliver and Nelson Norman were traded by the Pirates to the Rangers. The Rangers traded Adrian Devine, Tommy Boggs, and Eddie Miller to the Braves. The Rangers completed the deal by sending Ken Henderson to the Mets on March 15, 1978.
