History and current status

The school was founded in 1894 and has occupied various sites during its history. It now has premises south of the City at Farewell Hall. The School is a member of the Girls School Association.[1]

Leadership and staff

The school is a Church of England foundation, whose current head teacher is the Revd Ann Templeman, one of very few ordained women to be head of a senior school. The Chair of the Governors is Mr W Hurworth. In May 2011 it was announced Revd Ann Templeman was to step down as headmistress after 13 years at the school.

Academic results

Academic Results are higher than average, even for the independent sector. Government performance figures show 98% of students achieving 5 Grade A* - C grades or better in their GCSEs.[2]

Scholarships

The School offers a number of scholarships and bursaries, including one which offers up to a 100% rebate on the fees for seven years.[3]

Notable former pupils

Projects

The school works in co-operation with the Durham/Lesotho Link and girls from the sixth form visit the Kingdom of Lesotho every summer to help in orphanages that support children affected by AIDS. The country is completely surrounded by South Africa, making it expensive to get AIDS relief to the county. Many fundraising events take place throughout the year to increase funds for these projects.
