Jim Buttimer

Jim Buttimer

Jim Buttimer was an Irish sportsperson who played hurling with the Cork senior inter-county team in the 1940s.

Buttimer first came to prominence as a goalkeeper in 1939 when he won his first Munster title. He later played in that year’s All-Ireland final, however, Kilkenny defeated Cork by a point in the famous ‘thunder and lightning’ final. Cork bounced back in 1940 with Buttimer adding a National Hurling League medal to his collection, however, Cork faltered in the Munster Championship. He won a second National league title in 1941, however, the Munster and All-Ireland Championships were severely hampered to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. Cork were nominated to represent Munster in the championship decider where they defeated Dublin giving Buttimer his first All-Ireland medal. Cork were later defeated by Tipperary in the delayed Munster final, earning the unusual distinction of being All-Ireland champions but provincial runners-up. Buttimer was replaced in goal by Ned Porter for the 1942 championship, however, he came on as a substitute in Cork’s All-Ireland victory over Antrim, giving him a second All-Ireland medal.
