Union City is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the current population is about Appox 73,000. It was incorporated in 1959, combining the communities of Alvarado and Decoto. Alvarado was the original county seat of Alameda County, and the site of the first county courthouse is a California Historical Landmark (#503).

Union City will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary [http://www.unioncity50.com 50th Anniversary] in 2009, with a year of events planned for the community.

The San Francisco Bay Area Flight 93 Memorial is in Sugar Mill Landing Park. It is the first completed monument in the United States designed specifically to honor the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, which was bound for San Francisco, but was hijacked and crashed in rural Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.3 mi²), all land. The Niles Cone aquifer, managed by the Alameda County Water District, supplies much of the water consumed by Union City. It is adjacent to Fremont and Hayward. Fremont, Union City, Newark order by size are made up of Tri-Cities area.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2008, there were 66,869 people, 18,642 households, and 15,696 families and 15,696 families residing in the city and a total of 17,130 jobs and 32,700 employed residents in 2000. The population density was 1,341.2/km² (3,473.0/mi²). There were 18,877 housing units at an average density of 378.6/km² (980.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 30.21% White, 6.70% African American, 0.53% Native American, 43.39% Asian, 0.91% Pacific Islander, 11.53% from other races, and 6.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.96% of the population.

There were 18,642 households out of which 45.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% were non-families. 11.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.57 and the average family size was 3.83. The median price of a house in Union City is about $400,000.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.0 males.

According to a 2006 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $76,223, and the median income for a family was $82,717. Transportation

Union City is served by Interstate 880 (Nimitz Freeway) and SR 238 (Mission Boulevard). Public transportation is served by rapid transit system BART with the ,*Union City (BART station).the local bus system Union City Transit (originally The Flea) which serves the entire city, with mainline bus services,which is supplemented by AC Transit. It is also served by Dumbarton Express, running from the BART station across the Dumbarton Bridge to Palo Alto.

Officials with Bay Area Rapid Transit, AC Transit and the city of Union City, California, held groundbreaking ceremonies for the new multimodal passenger facility on November 13 2007. The project includes a conversion to solar power generation for the station's energy needs, which could make it the first station in the United States to be powered by solar energy. The construction is expected to cost $100 million and be completed in 2015.
