Gang of Nine

Gang of Nine

The Gang of Nine was a group of IBM competitors who came together in 1988 to create the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) bus, to compete with IBM's MicroChannel Architecture (MCA). These companies were AST Research, Compaq Computer, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, NEC, Olivetti, Tandy, WYSE, and Zenith Data Systems. The name "Gang of Nine" is in reference to the notorious Gang of Four, who were Chinese communist officials who fell into disfavor after the death of Mao Zedong.
