The Singapore Olympic and Sports Council, the predecessor of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), was established in 1947. It became an affiliate of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1948. The same year, Singapore sent its first two-men team to the Olympics in London. The late Lloyd Valberg became the first Singaporean ever to participate in the Olympic Games. He was accompanied by the Manager, the late Jocelyn de Souza.
This first international outing paved the way for Singapore's participation at other international and regional games which included the 1951 inaugural Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games at Cardiff, Wales in 1958 and the inaugural Southeast Asian Games (then known as the SEAP Games) in 1959. Since then, Singapore has been a regular participant in these games.
