Seyid Azim Shirvani

Seyid Azim Shirvani ( _az. Seyid Əzim Şirvani), (1835-1888) was an Azerbaijani poet. He was born in 1835 in Shamakhi. He got his elementary education in his native city, but soon was sent to Baghdad and then to Egypt to receive religious education. After returning to Shamakhi, Shirvani started paying attention to secular sciences and the problems of education. He started learning Russian, Persian and Arabic along with studying European and Russian literature. Being concerned with the progress the spiritual emancipation Azerbaijani's, in 1869 Shirvani established an Azerbaijani-Russian school where special attention was paid to secular sciences.
