Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is located in Edwardsville, Illinois and is the younger of the two constituent institutions of Southern Illinois University. The school was established in 1957. SIUE’s programs consist of Liberal Arts and General, Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy. The school is accredited to give degrees for both undergraduate and graduate programs. According to the US News & World Report: America's best colleges of 2008, SIUE is considered a top tier school in the midwest masters category and ranks in the top ten midwest masters public colleges. There is no Illinois public university ranked higher than SIUE in that category.

SIUE is in the top one-third of all public and private Midwestern universities.

In addition, SIUE was heralded by U.S. News for a third consecutive year in the senior capstone experience category, among 13 elite universities—including Harvard, MIT, Brown, Duke and Princeton—for its comprehensive programs measuring the competency of graduating seniors.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s School of Business has been ranked as a Best 290 Business School in the 2008 edition of the Princeton Review. It is also accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Only 15% of business schools worldwide are accredited by the AACSB, which is considered to be the premier accrediting body for business education.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is located on 2,660 acres (4.16 mi², 11 km²) of beautiful rolling hills of trees and lakes (being one of the largest campuses in the U.S. landwise).

Total enrollment in 2003 was 13,295 (undergraduate and graduate) students; 2005 had 13,460; 2006 has 13,449. In 2004 there were 68,523 living alumni. The international student population approaches 400 students. The top five countries represented on campus are India, Kenya, Nepal, China and Ghana.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville began as an outgrowth of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The president of the combined Southern Illinois University system is Glenn Poshard. Glenn Poshard has been surrounded by controversy as of late, having been caught plagiarizing most of his doctor dissertation and masters' thesis.

SIUE trivia

* The school mascot is the Cougars. On July 31, 1967, SIUE held an official election to decide what the mascot would be. Between a Titan and cougar, an overwhelming majority chose the cougar (1,446 votes for Titan and 5,285 votes for Cougar.)
* SIUE has an NCAA Division I national championship in men's soccer, won in 1979 against Clemson University of the ACC. The men's soccer program competed in D-I from 1973-95 before dropping down to D-II.
* SIUE won its first NCAA Division II softball championship in 2007 by defeating Lock Haven 3-2 in the longest championship game in history (twelve innings). The Cougars won their last sixteen consecutive games of the season.
* SIUE once housed two live cougar mascots. From 1968 to 1985, the female cougar, Chimega (an Indian word for cougar), was the official mascot. On March 18, 1985, Chimaga died of old age. In July 1982, Kyna became the second official mascot of SIUE. After only five years at SIUE, Kyna was sent to a Wildlife Preserve in Southern Illinois near Metropolis. SIUE no longer houses live mascots.
* SIUE is about 20 miles from St. Louis, Missouri.
* SIUE is one of the largest employers in Suburban St. Louis with over 2,000 employees.

* SIUE is one of four colleges in the St Louis area to have AACSB accreditation (the highest accreditation available for business schools) in both their business and accounting programs.

* According to the 2008 Princeton Review, SIUE has been ranked as a best 290 Business School.

* The school newspaper, The Alestle, is named for the school's three campuses: Alton (the location of the dental school), East St. Louis and Edwardsville.
* In January 2005, the SIUE School of Pharmacy received Precandidate Status from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the first step in the accreditation process, and a significant milestone in the development of the program. Receipt of such status allowed the SIUE School of Pharmacy to admit students into the program. In July 2005, the program was elected to Associate Status with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). In August 2005, the first class of Doctor of Pharmacy students matriculated into the professional program (located on the Edwardsville campus). In June 2006, the School of Pharmacy was granted "Candidate" status from the ACPE. Students graduating from a school with candidate status have the same rights as students from an accredited school.
* In 1965, SIUE opened its doors to students.

* Recently received the honor of being named "Campus With the Most Geese" in the United States, by the American College Ranking Counsel. SIUE students are often discouraged by the amount of Geese excrement around campus.
* A student-to-faculty ratio of 2 to 1.
* SIUE's School of Engineering is the most comprehensive engineering school in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Engineering departments include: Civil engineering, Computer engineering, Computer science, Construction, Electrical engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical engineering.
* In 2005, SIUE launched the Southwest Illinois Advanced Manufacturing Center, which performs applied and basic research for product/process development and improvement. The center is funded by the U. S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.
* As of October 2007, the waiting list to become a patient in the School of Dental Medicine is approximately thirteen months in length.

* For the Fall 2008 Semester, SIUE fielded nearly 8,000 applications for 1,850 freshmen positions and has started a waiting list. It is the largest SIUE freshman class ever.
