Smt.Ramkuwar Devi Fomra Vivekananda Vidyalaya

Smt. Ramkuwar Devi Fomra Vivekananda Vidyalaya Junior College (SRDFVV) is a co-educational senior secondary school in the suburb of Chennai, Chromepet. It is an English medium school affliated to CBSE, New Delhi. It is a unit of the Vivekananda Educational Society, a non-profit, service organisation which has been inspired by the principles of Swami Vivekananda started several schools in and around Chennai city. The society now runs Eleven schools with about 450 teachers and about 15,000 students.

In the academic year 2003-2004, the school began to follow the Tamil Nadu State Board syllabus at the senior secondary level. Mrs. Prema Mahadevan is at present the principal of SRDFVV, with Mrs. Ragini Subramanium and Mrs. Anuradha as the vice principals of the CBSE and the State Board streams respectively.

The school has its prime focus on generating well-rounded and responsible students, excelling in academics as well as in extra-curricular activities such as sports, dance, music and other fine arts. It encourages the students to participate in several inter-school competitions and the students have, inturn, brought laurels to the school by winning prizes in myriad activities.

Every year, the most eagerly awaited event for the students of SRDFVV as well as their parents, is the popular 'Three-day Culturals' hosted by the school in last week of January or the first week of February. Being intent on teaching it's students the importance of Indian culture and traditions, it is a custom of the school to choose themes from the Hindu Mythology. Songs related to the theme are then chosen or composed and sung and recorded by the students themselves, under the eminent guidance of the music teachers. Also, anecdotes are represented in the form of skits, for which the voices are pre-recorded. Following this, some students are trained to dance for the recorded songs in Indian classical and folk forms, while others are trained to play roles in the skits in which they are required to lip-sync with the recorded dialogues. This three-day show is a terrific hit among the people of Chromepet and attracts huge crowds.

Other significant events besides the Culturals include the Sports Day celebration in the month of January and the Annual day Celebration in February or March. Also, other functions important to the Indians, particularly the Hindus, such as Gokulashtami, Guru Poornima, Mahakavi Bharatiyar day, Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Teacher's Day, Rakshabandhan and so on are celebrated in a big way.
