The buildings were completed in April 1990.

Architecture

The architecture of The Gateway has been described as "world class" by the National Library Board. [ [http://infopedia.nlb.gov.sg/articles/SIP_889_2004-12-23.html Beach Road ] ] The buildings were designed by the U.S. based architect, I. M. Pei. [ [http://www.pcf-p.com/a/i/#g Pei Cobb Freed & Partners ] ] [ [http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/cx/?id=streetgateway-singapore The Gateway, Singapore ] ] The local Singaporean architectural firm that worked on this project was Chua Ka Seng and Partners Chartered Architects (CKSP). [ [http://www.cksp.com/projects/index.html Chua Ka Seng & Partners Chartered Architects ] ] T.Y. Lin Structural Engineers from San Francisco also collaborated on the project.

The shape of the buildings is trapezoidal, which is similar to the form used by I. M. Pei in the critically acclaimed National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington, D.C. Locals refer to the buildings as "two towering cardboard boxes". [ [http://infopedia.nlb.gov.sg/articles/SIP_889_2004-12-23.html Beach Road ] ]

The two buildings are named "The Gateway East" and "The Gateway West".

Tenants

The building's tenants includes the Gateway Law Corporation, a law firm that works on intellectual property, media and entertainment related law. [ [http://www.gateway-law.com/firm.html Gateway Law Corporation - Singapore Law Firm, Singapore Advocates & Solicitors ] ]
