Bidhannagar College (Bengali: বিধানণগর মহাবিদ্যালয়) is a government college in Bidhannagar (Salt Lake), Kolkata, affiliated to the West Bengal State University and run by the Government of West Bengal. It was formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Apart from undergraduate courses, the college also offers postgraduate courses in Microbiology and Zoology.

History

Bidhannagar College was established on June 25, 1984. It was originally housed in a small building at "BF-142, Salt Lake, Kolkata 700064" with a student strength of 52."Bidhannagar College Prospectus", 2007, published by the Principal, Bidhannagar College] Undergraduate courses in Mathematics and Economics began from the day of opening, while the Physics and Chemistry departments became functional from the academic session of 1985–86. Honours subjects offered in the Humanities were English, Bengali, History, Political Science and Philosophy. Honours courses in Botany and Microbiology opened during the 2002–2003 session. M.Sc. courses in Zoology and Microbiology started in 2004.

With the gradual increase in the number of departments and the corresponding student strength, the original building became inadequate. Building

The present building, located on convert|7.5|acre|m2 of prime real estate, is an impressive three-storey structure with manicured front gardens and a playground for students. The foundation stone of the new structure was laid by Jyoti Basu, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, on February 17, 1996. The new three-storied building, constructed at a cost of Rs 6.4268 crores (64 million), has an area of about convert|70000|sqft|m2.

Courses

Bidhannagar College offers 3-year Honours degrees in Humanities and Science courses, and postgraduate courses in Zoology and Microbiology. A student pursuing an honours course worth 800 marks has to take, of course, as per the stipulations of Calcutta University, two other subjects as their elective general subjects, one of which must be a non-language subject. A student also has to take two compulsory language papers, available combinations being English and Bengali, or English and Alternative English (offered only to those who did not take Bengali as a subject in Grades 11 and 12). All students are required to take Environmental Studies.
