Eriguthi

Eriguthi

Eriguthi , is a small village that comes under Gudiyattam taluk, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, India. It lies between Gudiyattam and Pernambut via Melpatti. The languages spoken here are Telugu and Tamil. The nearest town to Eriguthi is Pernambut and Gudiyattam. This village is surrounded by mountains and small forests. Due to a lack of rain, Eriguthi is dry with little cultivation.

Agriculture and Beedi (cigarettes made of tobacco leaves), are the main source of income. But since the fertility of the land is so poor, agriculture does not give much of a return to the farmers of the village, so many people have migrated.

The village has a primary school which was started in 1952. Initially this school was in the Telugu medium but now it has been changed to the Tamil medium. The village has three bus stops: 'Savadi', 'School' and 'Colony'.

The village has its own Panchayat to help the inhabitants. Disputes are solved by the Panchayat head, called the 'thalaivar' by the people. He solves the issues sitting under the big Ragi tree called "Rachai" near the Savadi bus stop, next to the village panchayat office.

One can find temples of the goddess 'Amman', Lord Venkateshwara, a church and a mosque in the village. During the Pongal festival, 'ThiruVizha' is celebrated to get the blessings of the goddess 'Amman' for the wellbeing of all living things in the village. During this festival season, the Bull Race is one of the events that attracts many from the surrounding villages. People from many parts participate with their bulls. The game is a bit too thrilling and because it proved dangerous, it was suspended temporarily by the village committee.
