Stanchester is a fairly large secondary school for children between the ages of 11 and 16 in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset. It has roughly 1070 pupils [cite web|url=http://www.geography.org.uk/projects/adepartmentwebsite/projectreports/stanchester/|title=A Department Website - Stanchester Community School, Somerset|publisher=Geographical Association|accessdate=2008-07-23] and is headed by Glyn Ottery.

It has a system of year heads, but in 2008 will turn into a house system. These houses have been named in a recent whole school assembly and it was announced by Glyn Ottery, that they would be named after parts of the school badge in Latin.

Stanchester was recently awarded the title of Specialist School for Media ArtsFact|date=July 2008 which came with a grant, and yet like many other schools in the Somerset area Stanchester overran its budget, in this case equipping some classrooms with Macintosh computers, upgrading the Media Suite along with the Information Technology rooms, purchasing a rack of the apple laptops (or iBook) and casting the space between the Science wing and a Main Block hallway with concrete and benches. However, Stanchester continues to run technical support staff for the computers and Media Technicians who care for the Macintosh computer section of the school.

election of head boy and girl

Stanchester has 48 Senior Students (Prefects) including the Head Boy and Head Girl. Senior Students are elected by first being nominated (this is the easiest round), then having two members of staff signatures next to their names in the staff room, then by handing in a manifesto. Those who make it past this round are then elected by the students and staff. The senior students that wished to apply to be Head Boy or Head Girl had to write a letter explaining why they wished to have the position and why they would be suitable for the position. Of these apilicants, four boys and four girls are put forward to an interview with the head teacher, two of the governers and the out-going Head Boy and Head Girl. Two are then chosen as Head Boy and Head Girl and the two runners up are given the position of Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl.

Media and drama

Stanchester's production of Oliver! was reviewed by peers as a remarkably good performance.Fact|date=July 2008
