Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (西交利物浦大学, XTJLU) is an independent university based in Suzhou, China, resulting from a partnership between the universities of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong. Location

XTJLU is situated in Suzhou Industrial Park in the eastern part of Suzhou in the province of Jiangsu, 70 kilometres west of Shanghai. A historic and scenic city, famous for its 2500 years of history and culture, Suzhou has sustained an average annual economic growth-rate of more than 15 per cent since the beginning of China’s "reform and opening up" period, with local GDP ranked the fourth largest in China, just after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) is the location for more than 2100 international companies, of which 53 are Fortune 500 Companies, including Siemens, L’Oréal and Nokia. SIP is home to a vibrant and growing multinational community, with nearly ten thousand expatriate workers from more than 20 different countries. Situated in the heart of the complex, XTJLU thus forms part of a purpose-built international community. History

XTJLU was opened on 29th May 2006 by representatives of the Chinese government and its two parent universities at Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong.

In its first year, the university’s intake comprised around 160 students, all from Jiangsu province. By 2007, this intake has risen to more than 800 students. When fully developed, the University campus will occupy 1050 mu with a student population of between eight and ten thousand, from across China and other parts of Asia.

The English Language Centre

All students study English for their first two years at XJTLU, and consequently the English Language Centre (ELC) plays a key role in its pedagogical approach. The modules are quite different from other Chinese universities where students follow a national curriculum. At XJTLU, students are trained to study in English, following a British degree programme, and therefore English for Academic Purposes (EAP) forms the core of the modules and assessments.The ELC is not a university department, and operates autonomously, with its team members using innovation and needs-related approaches to create and adapt EAP materials and projects which are relevant to the specific academic context.
