Roberto W. Clemente Middle School

Roberto W. Clemente Middle School

Roberto Clemente Middle School, opened in 1994, is a public middle school in the Montgomery County Public Schools system in Maryland. Students attending Roberto Clemente come from either Clopper Mill, Germantown, Great Seneca Creek, or Christa McAuliffe elementary schools. Graduating students are then fed to either Seneca Valley High School or Northwest High School. The school is named after Roberto Clemente, star outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates . It is currently headed by Mr. Shawn Joseph. Roberto Clemente, founder of the school, wished that it be named after him. Unfortunately, he did not live to see it completed.

The Upcounty Centers for the Highly Gifted

Roberto Clemente is also home to two rigorous courses of study--both the Math, Science, and Computer Science Program or the Humanities and Communication Program. Both programs feed from all elementary schools in the upcounty region of Montgomery County. The two center programs are designed for highly able students who desire to be further challenged academically and are ready to be actively involved in their own learning with a group of their intellectual peers. The program also is a great place for adults. There is an adult section of the school that instructs individuals 18 and older. This allows dropouts to continue their high school or college education. Students in both programs exhibit a high level of curiosity, analytical thinking, and imagination. The first Upcounty Center Coordinator was Peter Ostrander. At the end of the 2005-2006 school year he was replaced by Helen Nixon.
