The 1986 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season began with the team trying to improve on an 2-14 season. Many consider this the worst Buccaneer team ever. Prior to the season, the team selected Bo Jackson with the top pick in the 1986 NFL Draft, despite the fact that prior to the draft Jackson said he had no intention of ever playing for the team. Three weeks after the draft, Jackson signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Royals and would enter the following year's draft.

Steve Young played at quarterback for most of the season after Steve DeBerg threw seven interceptions in a single game. Kevin House and Jimmie Giles were released mid-way through the season. Kicker Donald Igwebuike was the only real stand out during the season. Bennett was fired at the end of the season.
