Ulpius Marcellus (son)

Ulpius Marcellus (son)

Ulpius Marcellus was thought of as being the name of the last-recorded governor of Roman Britain until the 1980s. He was believed to be the son of a previous holder of the office, also called Ulpius Marcellus. Certain older sources, such as Peter Salway's, "Roman Britain" consider him to have existed whilst later authorities now list Lucius Alfenus Senecio as the final known governor.

The theory that there was a second Ulpius Marcellus was based on two inscriptions at the fort at Chesters which mention him in connection with the second ala of Asturians. The dating of the arrival of the Asturians was previously considered to date to the early third century AD. It is now placed in the later second century and the inscription is therefore now interpreted as referring to the earlier Ulpius Marcellus only.
