Brian Reed Doyle (born
January 26, 1955in Glasgow, Kentucky) was a Major League Baseball infielderwho played for the New York Yankeesand Oakland A's. He played primarily as a second baseman. His brother, Denny Doyle, was also a Major League baseball player. Although a reserve for most of his career, Doyle starred in the 1978 World Seriesfor the World Champion Yankees.
Doyle was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 1972 amateur draft. Before playing a game for the Rangers he was traded to the Yankees along with
Greg Pryorin exchange for Sandy Alomar. Doyle joined the Yankees in 1978. He played parts of 3 seasons for the Yankees as a reserve infielder through 1980. He was drafted by the A's prior to the 1981 season in the Rule 5 Draft. He played 17 games for the 1981 A's before ending his career. During the regular season, Doyle played 110 gamesin his career, with a batting averageof .161 and one home run.
Willie Randolphwas injured for the 1978 World Series, Doyle filled in as the Yankee second baseman. In six World Series games, he batted .438 with 7 hits in 16 at bats, 1 double, 4 runs scored and 2 rbis, helping the Yankees to their second straight World Series victory.
After the end of the 1980 season, Doyle was selected by the
Oakland A'sin the Rule 5 draft. He played for the A's in 1981, his last season in the Major Leagues.
