James K. Omura is an electrical engineer and information theorist, currently the technology strategist for the
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation .Omura received his
B.S. andM.S. fromMIT , and hisPh.D. fromStanford University . He was a professor ofelectrical engineering atUCLA for 15 years. His notable work includes the design of a number ofspread spectrum communications systems, and theMassey-Omura cryptosystem (withJames Massey ). WithAndrew Viterbi he co-authored "Principles of Digital Communication and Coding" (ISBN 0070675163), a standard textbook indigital communications . He also co-authored the "Spread Spectrum Communications Handbook" (ISBN 0071382151).Omura founded the data security company
Cylink , which was acquired bySafeNet in 2003.In 2005 Jim Omura received the
