Ian Brannan

Ian Brannan

Ian Brannan is a radio broadcaster from Batley, in West Yorkshire, UK.

Early life

Ian attended a number of schools in the Batley area, including Staincliffe Junior School and Batley Boys High School. It was whilst here that his interest in radio developed after joining a school Hospital Radio club in 1990. He later joined HWD Hospital Radio at Dewsbury Hospital where his interest in radio developed yet further.

Professional career

Ian Brannan's first paid job came in April 1997 at AA Roadwatch in Leeds, presenting travel news all over the North of England on numerous radio stations.

There was more travel news after the AA when he moved to BBC Radio Leeds in the summer of 1998, where he presented the traffic news on the BBC Radio Leeds breakfast show alongside Liz Green and Andrew Edwards.

Sun FM

In October 1999 Ian left Radio Leeds and joined Sun FM in Sunderland to do the afternoon drivetime show. During his time at Sun FM Ian hosted a competition where a lucky winner could win a whole £5 if they could work out what the cult children's TV artist Tony Hart was describing. Ian also made it into a newspaper some 150 miles away, the Liverpool Echo after advising Sunderland football fans to "lock up their hubcaps" ahead of a visit by the Reds to the city, and giving away tickets to the match for the first person to take off their car wheel.

Real Radio

Ian left Sunderland and returned to his native Yorkshire for the launch of Real Radio on 25th March 2002. Ian was part of the launch presentation team hosting the Real Sports Phone In, alongside former football stars such as former Liverpool & England Captain Emlyn Hughes and Sheffield Wednesday striker David Hirst.

Ian has also been nominated as a producer at the Sony Radio Academy Awards, in the category of Station Sound for Real Radio Yorkshire, and for Work Your Way to the USA in Competition of the year in 2003. In addition he was one of the producers which helped Real Radio win a Bronze Sony Award in 2005 for the Real Radio Fugitive competition.

In August 2005 he moved to Real Radio in Wales to host the Ian & Angela Breakfast Show, alongside Angela J. Whilst in Wales Ian gave away the biggest cash prize in the history of Welsh radio (£30,000), and in 2006 toured the country broadcasting the show from a caravan which moved from town to town each day, on the World Tour of Wales feature. During this time Ian came last in a moustache growing competition, Gayle Lofthouse came first with her big hairy tash, but she's still damn better looking than Daryl Denham.

In February 2007 Ian returned from Wales back to Yorkshire to host the Breakfast Show on Real Radio UK, the national digital version of Real Radio which comes from their Leeds studios and is available on DAB Digital Radio in the North East, North West, West Midlands and London and on Sky Digital 0146. He also hosts a Sunday morning show for Real Radio's sister station Century FM. He now presents 1-4pm weekdays on Real Radio Yorkshire.
