A list of American films released in 1939.
"Gone with the Wind" won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Mitchell, the film was a romantic drama, set during the American Civil War. It was produced by David O. Selznick, and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. "Gone with the Wind" won eight of the 13 Academy Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Actress, (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress, (Hattie McDaniel). McDaniel's award was notable as the first won by an African-American performer.
It was the highest grossing film of the year, and remains one of the most profitable films ever made.
