Sergeant 30 Callum Stone is a fictional character in the ITV police drama, "The Bill". He joined the programme on 8 August 2007 and is portrayed by Sam Callis.

Debut

Callum hits the ground running as he arrives at Sun Hill, when he promptly helps diffuse a hostage situation in the custody area. He leads a team of officers to investigate how a girl named Lucy sustained a head injury during a party hosted by a respected former DI, whom Callum knows personally. His suspicion of the former DI being corrupt leads him to consfiscate the weapon used on Lucy and launches a sting operation with his contacts from the DPS, pretending to bribe the ex-DI and being able to connect him to the assault.

Then Acting Inspector Dale Smith and PC Dan Casper are relieved of their suspicions of Callum being corrupt, but are unimpressed with his maverick policing methods.

Character

Sgt. Callum Stone swooped into Sun Hill with a style that simply isn’t cricket. Disarming a thug from his cricket bat as he entered the station on his first day, it was crystal clear that Stone is an alpha male who’s taking no hostages.

Stone's a leader of men and has no time for the meek or the weak. He has been quick to sum everyone up in a nutshell and plan their futures playing to their strengths.

Stone’s a tough cockney. He enjoys policing in uniform for the statement it makes – CID isn’t for him.

He’s a natural leader but also one of the lads who is encouraging, part of the team and full of camaraderie.Stone’s got a strong sense of right and wrong and knows the law inside-out – enough to know how far to bend it for his advantage.

Stone has been seen to dole out his own style of justice: when it looks like a bad guy is going to get away with their crime, determined to see justice done, Stone makes them pay himself. Now he has recruited his own gang. Will Fletcher saw his sergeant talk a paedophile into leaping to his own death – that was his initiation into Stone’s gang. Then Sally Armstrong joined up after Stone found out she had drunk too much booze whilst undercover and ended up driving later that evening. He thought she was irresponsible but didn’t hold it against her: another gang member recruited.

And when Ben Gayle head-butts an abusive father Stone makes sure he’s not sacked for it, by ensuring it’s covered up. However after all of this he has become popular amongst his officers and the team now appear to show him a lot of respect.

In episode 625, "Appropriate Force", it is revealed by one of the suspects that Stone "sleeps around", with other men's wives.

Sgt.Stone likes to wear his uniform different from the rest of the relief, as he does not bother to put his clip on tie on

In recent times, Sergeant Stone was considered as the new Inspector to replace Gina Gold, but Gina said that she she thought Callum would prefer to be out there on the front line with his team, and wouldn't be prepared to change any time soon. Newcomer Rachel Weston (The Bill) has since been promoted to Inspector by Spt. John Heaton (The Bill).

PC Emma Keane

Stone has revealed in a recent episode of The Bill that he is attracted to colleague Emma Keane. She was in major danger and when Stone had found her in someone elses home, about to be killed, the first thing he does is rushes up to Emma and asks, "are you alright". She says, "yes" and he replies "Are you sure?" Later in the episode, Emma and Stone are alone in his office, and Emma says, "I reckon I've got you sussed". Stone acts like he doesn't know what shes talking about, however when she leans in for a kiss, then Stone does as well and then Emma moves back grinning, and says,"yep I was right". The episode ends with Stone standing in the room alone thinking.

Frontline

PC Keane and PC Armstrong are patrolling Sun Hill when they hear an explosion which has caused massive devastation with many injured and killed. Sgt Stone and PC Fletcher arrive to help their female colleges to take people to safety. PC Keane attempts to help a female trapped in her car but the door is jammed. 'Dr Blackman' from St. Hughes' arrives and says he will assess the females injuries while PC Keane helps others. The firemen finally free the distraught female who tells PC Keane the 'Doctor' indecently assaulted her.

The man notices PC Keane looking at him and attempts to flee, but PC Keane catches up and tries to restrain him. He throws her violently onto a car where she damages her wrist. Seeing PC Keane in trouble, Sgt Stone arrives and tells her to get her wrist checked out at the hospital in which she declines. He orders her to keep out of the danger zone and to go back to the station. Arriving at the station she receives a phone call from her father (who is a DCI) who is checking weather she’s safe. Later PC Keane and Sgt Stone spot the fake Doctor and give chase.

Outnumbered the 'Doctor' stops by the bridge where Sgt Stone grabs his collar and threatens to throw him off while PC Keane looks in disgust. She walks off to find some smoke coming from an office window and raises the alarm. Giving regular reports via her radio she goes inside and gets all the employees to safety when she sees a man with a large suspicious package arriving.

A concerned PC Keane promptly instructs him to carefully put it down as it could contain an explosive. The delivery man is lead to safety when the distressed office manager informs PC Keane that there are four more people inside the smoke filled building. She rushes inside the building and after shouting manages to find three. She climbs the stairs putting herself in more danger where she spots the last person unaware he is in danger (due to loud music coming from his earphones) and leads him down the exit to safety.

Walking away from the exit she spots two more delivery men the other side of the suspicious package and she shouts at them to keep back. Still giving updates on her radio she informs her collages back at the station everyone is safe when a huge explosion rocks the building. Getting no reply from PC Keane's radio, Inspector Gold is concerned and instructs all units to the scene where PC Keane is lying dead covering in debris. A distraught and determined Sgt Stone performs CPR but cannot find a pulse on the injured PC.

Upset he doesn’t give up and carries on with the heart compressions while the other Sun Hill officers gather around.Sgt Stone is obviously distraught by Emma's death and ends up breaking down when told to take some days off to come to terms with her death. He was noticeably affected, and many other officers have been forced to question whether or not something was going on between Stone and Emma.
