Forward anonymity

Forward anonymity

Forward anonymity is a design goal of many systems and software which intend to protect privacy and ensure anonymity, such as anonymous remailers. The property of forward anonymity means that a recipient or eavesdropper on an anonymous message cannot work backwards and discover the original sender. This protects publishers of documents, for example. In contrast, backwards anonymity protects the recipient from discovery. When these properties are combined into perfect forward anonymity, anyone attacking the system or software can discover neither sender nor receiver.
