Rail transport in Lithuania is operated by state own company
Lithuanian Railways( _lt. Lietuvos Geležinkeliai).
Currently the main
railroadnetwork in Lithuaniais RailGauge|1520 broad gauge.
There are also few
standard gaugelines and convert|158.8|km of RailGauge|750|mm narrow gauge railwaylines remaining, although only convert|68.4|km|abbr=on of them (serving five stations) are regularly used, employing 12 locomotives. They are included in the Registry of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Lithuania.
The first railroad in Lithuania was built in 1861. It was a part of
Saint-Petersburg- Warsawrailroad, and the line lasted from Kaunasto Virbalis
