George Porter, Jr. (born December 26, 1947 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a bassist and singer in New Orleans most famous for playing with The Meters. Along with Art Neville, Porter formed the group in the mid 60's and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the group is called the Funky Meters, and Porter is still a member.

He had been active in playing with his own group the Runnin' Pardners, and also other projects such as The Trio with Johnny Vidacovich, New Orleans Social Club, and Deep Fried but is now focusing his efforts on his own band Porter Batiste Stoltz. He has been one of the most in demand bassist New Orleans, and has been performing and recording with wide range of artists including Dr. John, Paul McCartney, Robbie Robertson, Willy DeVille, Robert Palmer, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Johnny Adams, Earl King, Tori Amos, and Snooks Eaglin among many others.

  • On January 4, 2008, on Sirius Radio's Jam-on, Stef Scamardo (wife of Gov't Mule Warren Haynes) stated that the Gov't Mule Song "3 String George" was named for George Porter, Jr. because one of his first bass guitars only had three strings. He did not even know that it would have been possible to fix the bridge of the guitar, so that the fourth string could be added.
