Creators Syndicate is an independent distributor of comic strips and syndicated columns for daily newspapers. It was founded in 1987 by Richard S. Newcombe, and is based in Los Angeles. Creators was one of the first syndicates to allow its clients to maintain creative control of their material. Since its inception, Creators has become only the second major independent syndicate founded since the 1930s.

Founding of Creators Syndicate

Richard S. Newcombe accomplished what most industry analysts considered impossible: He founded the first successful independent newspaper syndication company in two decades—only the second major independent syndicate started since the 1930s.

When Rick Newcombe left News America Syndicate after it was sold to King Features, his upstart syndicate was quickly given substantial fire power when Ann Landers and Johnny Hart signed on. Within a few months Herblock joined the team, and Creators Syndicate hasn't looked back.

Awards and recognition

Creators Syndicate has more Pulitzer Prize winners than any other syndicate. This list includes Steve Benson, Connie Schultz, Steve Breen and two-time winners Mike Luckovich, Michael Ramirez and Paul Szep.

In addition to Pulitzer Prizes, Creators has a stellar comics section responsible of winning many different categories of Reuben Awards, for cartoon excellence. Included in this list are best cartoon winners B.C., Wizard of Id, Momma and Speed Bump. Winners in other categories include Ballard Street, Chip Bok, Archie and many others.
