Battle bus

Battle bus

A battle bus is a luxury coach used by reporters and political commentators to follow a politician, usually a party leader, to their speeches and other engagements during a general election campaign, especially in the United Kingdom.

History

Battle buses were first seen in the late 1970s, before which reporters followed party leaders by car. cite web | last = Wheeler | first = Brian | publisher = BBC | date = 2004-12-22 | url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4117117.stm | title = "Last stop for the battle bus?" |accessdate = 2007-05-11 ] The battle bus was a significant feature of the 1987 UK general election as David Owen and David Steel of the SDP-Liberal Alliance each crisscrossed the country in matching battle buses, cite web | publisher = BBC | url = http://www.bbc.co.uk/election97/background/pastelec/ge87.htm | title = "1987 General Election" | accessdate = 2007-05-11 ] each painted bright yellow.cite web | url = http://www.bbc.co.uk/politics97/background/pastelec/87alli.jpg| title = "1987 General Election" | accessdate = 2007-05-11 ]

By 1992, the journalistic trail had taken to the air with the introduction of the battle plane.
