Palaiomoiri (Koloni)

Palaiomoiri or Paleomiri (Greek: Παλαιομοίρι), older forms: Palaiomoirion and Paliomoirion, formerly Koloni (Greek: Κολώνη), is a Greek settlement located around 11 km northeast of Megalopoli, 20 to 19 km north from the nearest interchange with the GR-7/E65 (Kalamata - Megalopoli - Tripoli), about 50 km southeast of Andritsaina, about 23 km southeast of Karytaina and about 44 km west-southwest of Tripoli. Palaiomoiri had a population of 34 in 2001 for the village. Palaiomoiri is also in the municipal district of Trilogo and the municipality of Megalopoli. Palaiomoiri are connected with a road connecting the Karytaina-Dimitsana Road and the road connecting Megalopoli and Lykocheia.

Geography

Palaiomoiriis situated in a mountain slopes. The mountains cover the area and are made up of rocks with grasslands and bushes along with a couple of forests and ungevetated spots at higher elevations. A river flows to the south and it is mainly dry during the summer months. Farmlands are within the village. Its panorama includes the Lykaio mountains to the west, its nearby mountains can be seen.

Population

History

The village used to have a large population before the beginning of the 20th century. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, the population began to decline as residents moved to larger towns and cities and outside of Greece including North America. The population lost dramatically later on and is either expected to be a ghost town or have summer residents that may still work in agriculture, its only primary industry of the village ever since.

Palaiomoiri has a church, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest school and lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Megalopoli.
