Paul Carter (academic)

Professor Paul Carter (born 1951, Oxford, England) is an historian, writer, philosopher and artist who is currently serving as an 'interdisciplinary scholar' in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne.

He has authored a number of books mainly concerned with Australian history, Australian places and their identity. He has been involved with the design of some notable contemporary public spaces in Australia. In collbaroration with Lab Architecture Studio he conceived and developed the design for the 'Nearamnew', the elaborate surface treatment of the public plaza at Federation Square in Melbourne. In addition to Nearamnew, his most notable public artworks include Named In The Margin (Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney, 1990) and Relay (Sydney 2000 Olympics, with Ruark Lewis)
