Gert Thys

Gert Thys (born November 12, 1971 in Prieska, Northern Cape) is a long-distance runner from South Africa, who represented his native country in the men's marathon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in 2004 (Athens, Greece). Employed as a security officer, Thys was the African record holder in the marathon. He became the first man to run three marathons sub 2:08 and to run two sub 2:08 marathons in one year (1998).

On April 25, 2006 Athletics South Africa (ASA) announced that Thys has been suspended from all athletics competitions, pending a resolution of his anti-doping case. ASA was advised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that in accordance with the international standards for the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratories, the laboratory of Seoul, South Korea, informed the IAAF that Thys's urine sample collected on March 12 at the Seoul International Marathon, contained the prohibited substance norandrosterone.
