Centre for Environmental and Planning Technology University

The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University is a multi-disciplinary centre of study and research in Ahmedabad, India.

History

The institute began as a pioneering school of architecture in 1962 with Balkrishna V. Doshi as its Founder. Bernard Kohn, a French architect, and C. B. Shah, an engineer who had returned from America, were part of the founding team.
George Anslevekis spent long periods teaching at the school.

Teachers

The large number of Le Corbusier projects in the city, and B.V.Doshi's association with the Master Architect, made the school a mecca for young architects in the 1960s and early 1970s when Louis Khan was building the Indian Institute of Management nearby. Many architects were visiting teachers at the school for various lengths of time. These included Louis Khan, James Sterling, Jane Drew, Buckminister Fuller, Charles Correa and many others. Christopher Charles Benninger taught in the school from 1968 to 1969 while on a Fulbright Fellowship to India, and returned to set up the School of Planning in 1971.

At that time B.V.Doshi created the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), becoming the Dean. The institution took on a multi-disciplinary character. Hasmuch C. Patel became the Director of the School of Architecture. During this period Anant Raje, who was Louis Khan's close associate, and Kabushan Jain, a well known conservationist, joined the faculty.

Expansion

Thereafter the Kanoria Centre for the Fine Arts, the Centre for Advanced Studies in Structural Engineering, a School of Interior Design, and several galleries were added to the campus. A course in Construction Management was created in 1999.

Karula Varkey headed the School of Architecture until his untimely death in the year 2001, when Professor Kabushan Jain took over the school's direction and lead it toward university recognition.

For several years in the early 2000s the School of Architecture was affiliated with the Patan University in North Gujarat.
Krishna Shastri founded the School of Interior Design and Dr. Rasu Vakil, a structural engineer, has been the Dean of the institute for the past two decades. New courses in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and others, have been added to the curriculum.

In 2006, the Government of Gujarat created the Centre for Environmental Engineering and Planning (CEPT) University, making the institution an autonomous body.
