WQXL is a Religious formatted radio station located in
Columbia, South Carolina, but is licensed by the FCCto the nearby town of Springdale. The station broadcasts on 1470 AM with a ERP of 11 kW. during the day and .1 kW at night.
1470 signed on in 1954 as WOIC and became WQXL in 1956 after the station was sold to new ownership. The WOIC call-sign resurfaced that same year on 1320 AM (now
WISW). WQXL originally signed on with a Big Bandformat, which eventually gave way to a Top 40format by the end of the decade. However it was handicapped with a daytime-only signal and was unsuccessful in competing against format rivals WNOK and WCOS, which each had full-time signals. Probably its most notable personality was Mackie "Cactus" Quave who had worked at WISand had a wildly successful kids tv show on WIS-TV. WQXL switched to Country musicin the Summer of 1966, but again was bested by WCAY. In 1973, the station switched to Religious programming and eventually adopted a Contemporary Christianformat.
WQXL was shut down on August 23, 2006 in preparation to be moved. While the station was off the air, new ownership reallocated the station's city of license to Springdale and increased the station's hours of operation to full-time while increasing the station's power to 11 kW during the day, .1 kW at night. In the meantime, WQXL's former studios and towers that date back to the WOIC era were torn down in early 2007.
WQXL resumed operations on August 10, 2007. The station is owned by Glory Communications, which is 100% owned by Alex Snipe, Jr. of Columbia, SC.
