Camas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2000 Census the county had a population of 991 (2005 estimate: 1,050) [http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/16/16025.html] . The county seat is Fairfield.GR|6

Camas County was created by the Idaho Legislature on February 6, 1917, by a partition of Blaine County. It is named for a lily-like bulb found in the region used as a food source by native Americans and settlers.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,079 square miles (2,795 km²), of which, 1,075 square miles (2,784 km²) of it is land and 4 square miles (11 km²) of it (0.38%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 991 people, 396 households, and 287 families residing in the county. The population density was 1 people per square mile (0/km²). There were 601 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.16% White, 1.21% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.91% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 5.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.5% were of German, 18.1% American, 15.4% English and 7.4% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 396 households out of which 30.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.20% were married couples living together, 4.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% were non-families. 22.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 104.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $34,167, and the median income for a family was $40,156. Males had a median income of $30,500 versus $21,563 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,550. About 7.20% of families and 8.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.20% of those under age 18 and 8.50% of those age 65 or over.
