Redcliffe is a residential suburb of the Moreton Bay Regional Council in the north-east of the Redcliffe peninsula, approximately km to mi|num=28|abbr=no|spell=Commonwealth|precision=0|wiki=yes north-northeast of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. Along with the surrounding suburbs, Redcliffe is a popular location for residents of Brisbane seeking a place to relax at its sandy beaches and café strip and hotels on Redcliffe Parade, through its central business district.

History

Redcliffe holds the distinction of being the first European settlement in Queensland, first visited by Matthew Flinders on 17 July 1799. [cite news | title = Redcliffe | work = Travel | publisher = The Sydney Morning Herald | date = 8 February 2004 | url = http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/02/17/1108500203689.html | accessdate = 2008-05-17 ] Explorer John Oxley recommended "Red Cliff Point" – named after the red-coloured cliffs visible from Moreton Bay – to the Governor Thomas Brisbane for the new colony, reporting that ships could land at any tide and easily get close to the shore. [cite web | last = Potter | first = Ron | title = Place Names of South East Queensland | publisher = Piula Publications | url = http://www.dovenetq.net.au/~piula/Placenames/page55.html | accessdate = 2008-05-17 ] The party settled in Redcliffe on 13 September 1824, under the command of Lieutenant Henry Miller with 14 soldiers, some with wives and children, and 29 convicts on 13 September 1824. However, this settlement was abandoned after one year and the colony was moved south to a site on the Brisbane River at North Quay, convert|28|km|abbr=on south, that offered a more reliable water supply.
