Special Troops Battalion

Special Troops Battalion

A special troops battalion (STB) is an organic unit of a modular brigade, division (or equivalent), corps or higher echelon Army organization. It may comprise companies from different branches of the Army, but typically has a headquarters & headquarters company (HHC) and signal network company at a minimum.

Within the infantry brigade combat teams (IBCTs) the STBs have a headquarters & headquarters, a military intelligence, a signal network support, and an engineer company. In the heavy brigade combat teams (HBCT) the STBs do not have an engineer company - two are assigned to the brigade but are instead each components of the two combined-arms battalions.

The Stryker brigade combat teams (SBCTs) do not have an STB and the components are treated as stand-alone units.

In the Sustainment Brigade, the STB is composed of an HHC and a signal network support company. When deployed, the sustainment brigade's STB will usually have a financial management (FM) company and a human resources (HR) company attached to it for command and control (C2) as well as administrative and logistics support.

Special troops battalions are not numbered units. They are part of the brigade or higher level organization, which performs critical internal support functions.
