"Cactus Makes Perfect" is an episode of "Garfield and Friends". It originally aired on November 25, 1989.

Episode recap

Jon takes Garfield and Odie to Cactus Jake’s dude ranch for a visit, and after they arrive, Jake announces that his wife (Annie) is getting things ready for a barbecue. Upon discovering that the barbecue is buried under hot coals, Garfield quickly tries to dig it out. Jake then relates Garfield to a cat "he" had back in 1945, and he also states that the cat is the reason why he met Annie.

In the flashback, all the cowboys around wanted to court Annie, but Jake felt he didn’t have a chance because he was having trouble making ends meet. Meanwhile, he and his horse (Red) are eating beans over a campfire one night when a starving Garfield-like cat comes across them. Jake gives him the beans and then takes him under his wing, much to Red’s chagrin.

The cat developed a reputation for going into various stores and eating food, and Jake paid for the food with the money he’d planned to use to go to the barber shop. Jake then felt embarrassed when Annie and a group of tough cowboys saw all this happening, and one of the cowboys grabbed the cat and intended to teach him a lesson. Jake ordered the cowboy to drop the cat, to which they all decided to "Jake" a lesson. The cat then opened the bullpen and bulls then ran out and chased the tough cowboys away. Annie then decided to court Jake because he was so protective of his cat, and they later got married. Back in the present, Jake says he sometimes misses the cat, but he changes his mind when Garfield takes food from the kitchen and Annie now looking terribly celluite yells at Jake.

Quotes

Jon: Garfield, quit thinking about food.

Garfield: “Quit thinking about food?” Why don’t you ask me to quit breathing?

Cat: Excuse me; whose idea was it to give the horse the last laugh? …You’re fired; you know that?
