Janja

Janja (Cyrillic: Јања) is a village in the Bijeljina municipality in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Janja is located in Podrinje and it is also the biggest village in Bijeljina. Janja it famous for the rivers Janja and Drina. Many people from Janja who now live in different countries come to Janja at summer to go to restaurants, music concerts and Festivals. Janja is the only Bosniak community in the Municipality.

About Janja

Janja is a small town near Bijeljina in north-east Bosnia and is famous for its river Drina and the little river Janja. Janja is also famous for being biggest village in former Yugoslavia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Janja is located on the major road between Bijeljina and Zvornik.

Located in the center of Janja is the Atik Mosque (dzamija). Janja has two mosques which have been rebuilt after the war. There are a large number of people from Janja who live in other countries such as Austria. Near the Atik mosque is the caffe 'bosna' where lots of bosnian singers attend.

History

There is no exact accurate source of when Janja was founded [http://www.janjarci.com/html/janja.html] . From 1878 to 1961 Janja was municipality centar. The 1991 census showed Janja had a population of 10,458.

Much of citizens are Bosniaks (Muslims) who were removed from the town Janja during the last agression from Serbia and Serbs (1992-95 Bosnian war). Most of refugees returned between 2001 and 2006. Two mosques were rebuilt on the same location where they were destroyed on 21st of april 1993. The Atik Mosque was opened on the 7th of August 2004. Džedid mosque was completed also.
